See it on a wall
A jewelled celestial maiden dances beneath a flowering tree, one arm drawing down a slender branch and a water pot resting at her hip, a golden spotted deer close behind her. Below curves a lotus pond in blue and green, lotuses in bloom, a thin band of sunrise glowing at the horizon.
Why this work
The woman-with-deer-beneath-a-flowering-tree is the ancient shalabhanjika image, the tree-spirit whose touch makes the tree blossom. Here she is set against the luminous orange ground and lacy tree-of-life foliage of the Pichwai tradition of Nathdwara, a graceful bridge between courtly folk painting and living devotional art.
