A bright-yellow Ganesha stands frontally on a lotus pedestal against a velvety black ground, four arms holding his attributes, heavily ornamented and bordered by a fine ochre vine.
Why this work
The gold-figure-on-black convention descends from the Tanjore and Mysore devotional schools, where deities were painted to glow by the light of an oil lamp in a home shrine. Ganesha — invoked at every beginning as the remover of obstacles — is the auspicious opening piece of the collection.
