The blue deity stands centred on a lotus pedestal, left arm raised in the Govardhan-lifting gesture, flanked by two white cows and enclosed in a dense pink-lotus border on black.
Why this work
Pichwai — literally "that which hangs behind" — are cloth paintings made since the 17th century to hang behind the Shrinathji deity at Nathdwara in Rajasthan. They are devotional service rather than decoration. The raised arm recalls the child Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to shelter his village from the storm. The most ceremonially significant work in the collection.
